Permeability Apparatus IS:2720(Part XVII)

The apparatus is used for the laboratory determination of permeability of soils using a constant or a variable head. This test is recommended for soils with coefficient of permeability in the range of 103 to 107 cm/sec. The minimum particle size of the soil which can be tested in the mould is 10mm.

Specifications :

The equipment comprises one each : Gun metal mould, 100mm I.D. x 127.3mm high x 1000ml volume. Gun metal mould extension collar, 100mm dia x 60mm high for the above mould. Gun metal drainage base plate with a recess for a porous stone and with an outlet valve. Metallic clamping ring .Gun metal drainage cap (top plate with a recess for a porous stone and fitted with an inlet valve and an air release valve. Gun metal dummy plate to serve as a false bottom during compaction. Porous stone for drainage cap.

Permeability Apparatus

Porous stone for base plate.Set of galss stand pipes approximately 6mm dia. 10mm dia and 20mm dia mounted on a wooden board. Each galss tube is longer than 1 meter and has a serrated end at the bottom to read water head 2 Nos. meter scales are fixed between the tubes. A length of 3 meter long rubber tubing with pinch cock is also supplied.

Universal or Combination Permeameter

The Apparatus can be used for both constant head and falling head permeability studies on all types of soil including clay, sand etc.

Optional:

Overhead tank made of steel, approximately 37.5cm dia x 1 mtr. High. It is provided with an inlet port at the top and size outlet at bottom with cocks and air inlet and water filling tube on top. An arrangement is provided to indicate the water level. An extra metallic tube having approximately 5mm/6mm I.D. and 1 meter long is also supplied 2.6kg x 310mm controlled fall and Rammer 4.89kg x 450mm controlled fall.

Spares: Pair of top and bottom porous stones for perimeter mould.

UNCONFINED COMPRESSION

Many a times it is essential to know unconfined compressive strength of soils saturated or nearly saturated. These results give an idea of the bearing capacities. Unconfined samples are unidirectional loaded gradually till failure in this test.

Jodhpur Permeameter

The Jodhpur Permeameter is fabricated according to the design developed at the Soil Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Universiy of Jodhpur by Professor Alam Singh. The apparatus is simple, sturdy and truly versatile and can be used for studying the permeability characteristics of all types of soil samples under different conditions in the laboratory as well as in the field. Both falling head and constant head test can be performed. Both remoulded and undisturbed specimens can be tested.

The equipment comprises the following :

Top cap fitted with water inlet and air rlease vent.
Dynamic compaction base plate.
Perforated base plate.
Perforated top plate.
Static compaction flanged end plug. 3 cm high.
Static compaction flanged end plug. 2.5 cm high.
